Feel-good Football
A record number of text messages was sent this week on Wednesday, when England beat Slovenia to progress to the knock-out stage of the World Cup. At 260 million, this is 7 million more than on New Year's Eve.
As well as being good news for England fans, England's continued progression in the competition is something that many UK businesses will be hoping for, both for the immediate impact that this can have on sales and also for the feel-good factor that it can provide in the longer term.
Like the communications sector, the immediate impact on sales around England games can be seen clearly in many retail categories, although often this is at the expense of others. The grocery sector for instance, benefits, while others that are more reliant on high street footfall can see a decline.
The longer term impact is harder to ascertain, but an early exit from the competition will surely compound the austere mood with the toughest budget in decades now upon us. However, with a successful run in the competition, who knows? Here's one England fan hoping that the mood is still good on Monday morning.
